Washington’s soil, weather condition, and human impact have created a surprisingly varied landscape. I hiked into the backwoods of Concrete and stumbled onto this scene: several old trees, the gnarled roots of which were covered in decades of velvety moss, standing as if guarding the entrance to a hidden lake within a seemingly uninhabited area. I stood for a long time in this natural vestibule, inhaling the fresh scent while my eyes took in all the beauty. Did I have enough greens in my pastel box to do my next painting justice? No, I did not, so I justified, once again, a trip to Dakota. Good for me; good for Dakota. The result is this painting - “Velvet Passageway”.
