In the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near where I live are many wonderful views of marsh meeting water along with waterfowl and other wildlife to paint. It is a favorite painting location of mine. Another painting in my "Hidden Waters" series, I was inspired to paint this particular scene because of the cloud formations and the sense of immense space in both the marsh area and the sky. I realized how magnificent the Earth is and how insignificant is man in comparison to the vista that spread out before me. I felt tremendous awe and joy that I wanted to permanently capture. This time my underpainting is monochromatic--an indigo blue hard pastel /alcohol wash to map in the scene then finished with a variety of soft pastels.
