There is an Arboretum near where I live that provides endless inspiration for paintings. This scene is one that I was inspired to capture because of the reflections in the water of the stream running through the quiet, forested glade on a cool Autumn day. With so much green in the scene it was challenging to create that sense of peace and tranquility I wanted to capture as well as the coolness of the shade--hence the blue-violets and blues that stand-in for the green foliage that had not yet turned color. This painting was part of my Solo Show that just ended and a favorite of visitors. I began with a hard pastel/alcohol undepainting using indigo blue, blue violet and raw sienna to set the mood and map in the dark values, then finished with a variety of soft pastels.
