This painting depicts a colorful autumn aspen grove in the high Sierra Nevada mountains above Hope Valley. I was mesmerized by the colors, shapes, shadows, movement and textures of the scene and tried to depict that by diversified mark making. The surface is Belgian mist by Wallis. The underpainting was done with pan pastels to establish general values. The corners of Holbein pastels are especially useful for grasses and bark texture, while Unison, Girault and Schminke were used for foliage.
