I painted this piece after an incredibly enriching and perspective-altering visit to Cambodia. To me this bicycle was the quintessential description of daily life in this city.
To start this painting, I wanted to capture the dusty grit and diffused atmosphere of the dry season, so I created a very rough textured surface adding a pumice and gesso mixture to a canvas panel. Before building up layers of pastel, I lightly sketched my subject in vine charcoal, which gives way easily and lends to the diffused feel of the light and mystery that is Siem Reap.
